What to wear for your family session

You’re all about capturing those precious moments with your family. After all the juggling between school, work, extra curriculars and nap times, you’ve finally nailed down the perfect date and time with your dream photographer. Now, onto the exciting part: choosing the outfits! Yay!!

Selecting attire that balances between coordinated, natural and effortlessly stylish can feel like a puzzle. You want your family to look harmonious without appearing too “Stepford”, all while honoring each person’s unique style.

Here’s a guide I put together to help you coordinate outfits for your upcoming family session.

First things first:

  • Textures: It’s cool to mix and match textures like denim, lace, knit, or tweed to add depth and interest to your outfits.
  • Accessorizes: If accessories like belts, scarves or statement jewelry are your thing, be sure to coordinate them to tie the look together. This could be coordinating the same colour or the same style.
  • Avoid Logos: The session is all about your family! Not the brands, so my advice would be to avoid clothing with visible logos or graphics, as they can be distracting in photos.
  • Comfort: I always say, if you feel good, you look good, so choose outfits that are not only stylish but also comfortable for everyone to move and play in during the session.

Spring Sessions:

Color Palette: Soft pastels such as light blues, blush pink, mint green, and lavender work well for spring sessions. Pair these with neutrals like cream, beige, or light gray for balance.

Attire Options:

  • Women: Flowy dresses or skirts in floral prints or light fabrics. Blouses or tops in pastel hues paired with white or light-colored jeans.
  • Men: Light-colored button-down shirts or polo shirts paired with khaki or light-colored pants. Lightweight blazers in soft colors can add a touch of sophistication.
  • Children: Dresses, rompers, or shirts in floral or gingham prints. Light-colored shorts or pants paired with coordinating tops. Consider adding cardigans or light jackets for layering.

Summer Sessions:

Color Palette: Bright and vibrant colors are perfect for summer sessions. Think bold blues, coral, turquoise, yellow, and crisp white.
